She loved performing from a young age and would jump at the opportunity to dance and sing on stage. She was taught to dance by her parents. She also received ballet classes at the Santa Monica Playhouse when she was a little girl. She began acting when she was offered a guest role in the TV drama Party of Five in the year 1996. The show was a success and she was admitted to New York University, however Kate Hudson was more interested in getting into show business than obtaining a degree. After performing in minor films, she was offered the role that would eventually become a major in her career. She was selected to portray Penny Lane in the comedy drama film Almost Famous. Despite being a film that failed at the box office it received positive critiques from critics, and it established Kate as an actor in the American film industry.
